Seventeen years ago we had our first girl. After two boys, I refused to even lay her on blue crib sheets. My mother hurried out to buy pink for me. Today Monica Rose is 17, and for the first time ever, one of our children is celebrating a birthday away from us. Last week she began her first job, and this week she took her first flight to spend her birthday with her brothers and Rebecca at Christendom, also attending her first college classes. That's a lot of firsts packed into a short time period. She has been handling the busy, crazy, and somewhat stressful time with grace and good humor. Mom, not so much. My eye is twitching and I've shed a few tears about giving her up for her birthday. It was my idea... what was I thinking??!!
I was thinking that going to Christendom would be fun and special. I was thinking her brothers will look out for her, and Rebecca (she is Kevin's girlfriend and Monica's dorm host) will make her birthday special. I was thinking how much she would enjoy classes at Christendom. (She got to sit in on Kevin's history class for his big presentation on the Vikings. Kevin is a great history teacher! I'm so thrilled she was there for his big day!) I was thinking that it is time to let the baby bird fly... just a little test flight though. I was thinking how much I love her.
Updated: wonderful pictures on Rebecca's blog here! She is so good to me!
