Today, the first Sunday of the month, is the day our pastor celebrates Mass in the Extraordinary Form. He was ill and forced to cancel. Since we were looking forward to it, we decided to attend another Latin Mass in our diocese, just a little further away at the Cathedral.
All the family members that can read agreed that it was getting easier to follow in the missal. We all got lost fewer times. Progress. But we have so much to learn and we are quickly growing very attached to the Traditional Latin Mass.
It is interesting that the Traditional Latin calendar and the Novus Ordo calendar are not the same. Fr. Z. has been pointing out for some time the need for those two calendars to be reconciled. I can't do much about that, but I am delighted to learn about the feasts on the Traditional calendar.
Today in the NO calendar it was Epiphany Sunday. In the traditional calender it was the Feast of the Holy Name. I guess on the Traditional calendar, Epiphany is celebrated on... Epiphany. That's nice for us, we had our last family Christmas party today and we can squeeze in another quick celebration on Thursday for Epiphany proper.
We really must moderate our celebrations here... not the feast day ones..just our own. :)
this is Fr. Gerald, our priest, celebrating the first TLM at our parish
(edited the 'calendar' mis-spellings, the Typepad spell checker did not object so I thought it was correct... it wasn't )
Are your sons learning to serve the Extraordinary Form of the Mass? God bless and Happy New Year!

They are not learning yet. So far, there are no opportunities for training unless I work on it at home. If a Latin Mass community in our area offers training, a couple of our boys are interested.

There is a DVD from the Fraternity of St. Peter that our boys used to memorize and learn their parts. They were able to start serving with only a few practices with our Priest because they had already studied with the DVD. The boys have been serving the Latin Ordinary Form of the Mass since 2002, and attending the Extraordinary Form of the Mass since 2008. So they new the Latin Mass well which I'm sure helped speed things up. Though I really do recommend you all get the DVD.
