Years ago, on the old Catholic Charlotte Mason email loop, someone posted the idea of having tea times with your children. The idea was to have some kind of theme or planned reading to go with it. It sounded lovely but I figured there was no way my boys would go for tea time. I was wrong. They don't drink tea, but we bake a nice snack to go with it and they're all about tea time.
We tried it a few times last year and this year we plan to have tea time on Fridays when the big boys arrive home from Saint Augustine's classes. We will use the Program for Achieving Character Education
as a framework for discussing a virtue each month. The program includes suggestions for Bible reading, stories that illustrate the virtue and discussion questions. We look up what the catechism has to say about it as well.
This month we are discussing self discipline. The children all quickly grasp the need for it and it's value, but like most of us, they find it difficult to implement. I tell them we're in this together and together we'll all move forward in the virtues.
