This year for our Lenten sacrifice we are giving up meat and desserts. We will also place an emphasis on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. There are certainly many opportunities in a family to practice them!
The children and I will read My Path to Heaven together and go through the spiritual exercises.
As always we will go to confession and try to make it to stations of the cross on Friday nights. (One of my favorite practices.)
The Lenten things we do or don't do are not what will make us holier and bring us closer to God. But when we do them with a heart full of love and a longing to live more and more for Him, the practices help us immolate ourselves. Lent turns our attention to the quietness and simplicity our hearts need to hear Him. Lent gives us tools to say 'Jesus, I love you and long to make reparation for the sins against you'. After all, He is all there really is.
Remember, man, that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return.
I was just thinking about doing this with the kids. This is just what I needed to be inspired. Thank you.
