I love old cookbooks....we have a '43 edition of Joy that has the WWII rationing info. More with Less (aka More with Lentils) is also a good oldie.

Increasing the level of humidity in the oven will also yield a harder crust. Since most of us don't have fancy ovens with humidity controls you can throw a cup of water into the oven when you put the bread in. A cup usually gives two loaves of french bread that nice rock hard crust.
