The article regarding the effects of ice cream on fertility was fun. It underscores the possibility that diary fats do indeed benefit our fertility. We see this in the, heavy-on-dairy, Brewer Diet as well. But dairy is only one piece of the puzzle. I've been working on this puzzle for a few years now. I thought I would summarize and share the pieces I have found so far. Please keep in mind that this is just the bits and pieces of research I have done, that make sense to me.
Naturally the basics are good rest, plenty of water and a healthful diet. We all know that high sugar, simple carbs and over-processed foods have little nutritional value. It may even hinder our body's natural functions as it tries to process ingredients we weren't meant to ingest. We need to eat complex carbs, like oatmeal, meat and dairy proteins and fat, produce that is a deep rich color all the way through, oranges, broccoli, spinach, sweet potatoes, red peppers... you know the drill.
Limit caffeine. Two cups of coffee a day, max.
Apparently a BMI of between 20 and 27 is the ideal range for fertility.
A good pre-natal vitamin or at least a good B complex and magnesium. (They work synergistically.) I like Professional Prenatal by Life Time as recommended in Marilyn Shannon's book Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition .
Older women, especially, may have low progesterone. There are natural creams on the market or your OB can prescribe a supplement, which is stronger. Either way, you must know the correct way to take it or you may actually hinder conception.
There is so much more when you begin researching nutrition and herbs. I try to distill what is really useful into a simple form so I don't get overwhelmed. I also pray for discernment or I can get carried away in my questing after another baby. My friends and I have often discussed how to find this balance. Some of us long for another baby so very much. I try to implement things that would be good for me in my vocation as mother and wife regardless of my baby questing status.
Let me know if I missed some important aspect and God Bless all of us who are hoping and praying for another!
