February can be a hard month to keep going through the daily school work. We decided to take a break from some of our formal text books and concentrate on shoring up math, Latin and writing skills this month. We will also continue in Bible study. That is a favorite!
I pulled out some games, math manipulatives and craft supplies we will use as well.
The girls and I plan to do Valentine cards while the boys and dad are at their super bowl party. We will use doilies, plenty of glitter glue, pretty pictures and cards we have been saving and the fronts of Christmas cards. (Lots of red in those!)
Literature will be the basis of our writing work. These books are pretty familiar to homeschoolers so I didn't bother to link them to a source. If anyone would like a source for a book here, please let me know and I will link it. Most of these titles are probably on Elizabeth's 4 Real Learning Booklist.
The big kids are reading historical literature set in or around WWII:
- The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp
- The Winged Watchman by Hilda Van Stockum
- The Mitchells: Five for Victory by Hilda Van Sockum
- Diary of Anne Frank
- More Than a Knight The True Story of Maximilian Kolbe published by Daughters of St. Paul
- The Small War of Sergeant Donkey by Maureen Daly
For science they are reading The Way Things Work by David Macauly
Reading poetry in two voices is fun with Joyful Noise by Paul Fleischman
The Catholic Mosaic books we will all read together are:
- The Holy Twins by Kathleen Norris
- Brigid's Cloak by Bryce Milligan
- Saint Valentine by Robert Sabuda
To the younger children, I will read:
- Charlotte's Web by E.B. White (meant to read it before they went to the movie over Christmas but, well, best laid plans...)
On the faith:
- Blesseds Jacinta and Francisco Marto by Anne Heffernan
- Leading Little Ones to Mary by Sister Mary Lelia Picture books
Picture books about winter:
- Owl Moon by Jane Yolan
- Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton
- Winter Story By Jill Barklem (part of the sweet, fun Brambley Hedge series)
- The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
- Winter on the Farm (from My First Little House Series, though we are making our way through the actual Little House books as well)
- Hopper by Marcus Pfister
WWII books:
- Pearl Harbor by Stephen Krensky
- Baseball Saved Us by Ken Mochizuki
What a joy homeschooling is!
I enjoyed looking at your plans, Bridget.

Such a rich and beautiful plan, and it is lovely to see the Blessed Mother at the center of all!!!
