In our ongoing quest to live beneath our means, we eat a lot of oatmeal for breakfast. I tell the children, "Oatmeal is what made generations of Scotts strong and hardy. Thats how they got to be fierce warriors." So the children eat it well.
We like good rolled oats that we buy in bulk from the food co-op. (Instant oats are for cookies and apple crisps.) We add some butter, vanilla, a little cream if we have it and brown sugar. Then I put out the add-ins. Dried fruit, chopped walnuts or fresh fruit to slice.
Each child has their favorite combinations. We especially like steel cut oats when I can splurge on them.
It's an inexpensive, nutritional powerhouse that you can't beat for feeding a large family.
